If a client has made unpublished changes in the Webflow Editor that they now want to discard, you can remove those changes by reverting to the last published state. Here's how to do it.
1. Understand What Counts as Unpublished Changes
- Unpublished changes in the Webflow Editor (not Designer) usually include edits to CMS content, static page content, or site settings like SEO titles and images.
- These changes are saved automatically but not visible live until published.
2. Open the Webflow Designer
- Go to the Webflow Designer (not the Editor) to access full version control.
- Only in the Designer can you restore previous backups to remove content edits entirely.
3. Restore a Backup to Discard Changes
- In the Designer, click Project Settings > Backups (clock icon in the top toolbar).
- Webflow automatically creates a backup every time you publish.
- Select the most recent backup before the client began editing, and click Restore.
- This will revert the entire site to that saved state, discarding all changes made since.
4. Use CMS Item Versioning (If Applicable)
- For individual CMS items, you can click into the item via the CMS panel in the Designer.
- If the client edited these but didn’t publish, simply revert to the last published version of the item manually.
5. Communicate with the Client Before Restoring
- Restoring a backup removes all changes since the restore point — not just the client’s.
- Clarify which content needs to remain and what can be discarded before proceeding.
Summary
To remove unpublished changes in Webflow, open the Designer and use the Backups tool to restore a prior published version. This is the only way to fully discard Editor changes that haven’t gone live.
