Can I transfer CMS hosting from one Webflow project to another, without needing to buy new hosting or restart the live site?

TL;DR
  • CMS hosting can't be transferred between Webflow projects; you must purchase new hosting for the new project.
  • Manually export/import CMS content (CSV), re-link references and images, and duplicate/recreate design.
  • Switch domain by removing it from the old project, adding it to the new one, updating A records, and republishing.

Webflow does not allow direct transfer of CMS hosting or CMS content between projects without some manual steps or limitations. Here's what you need to know and how to work through it.

1. CMS Hosting Is Tied to the Project

  • Webflow CMS hosting is project-specific. Hosting can't be reassigned from one project to another—you'll need to purchase a separate CMS hosting plan for the new project.
  • There is no way to “move” CMS hosting between projects without canceling the old hosting and purchasing new hosting on the new project.

2. You Must Migrate CMS Content and Design

  • Use the Webflow CMS Export/Import tools:
  • Export CMS collections as CSV from the old project.
  • Import into the new project using the CMS collection import tool.
  • Be aware of limitations:
  • Webflow does not support reference field imports directly—these require manual re-linking.
  • Images do not export; you'll need to manually upload images or link them again.
  • Duplicate or recreate your design using Webflow’s Project Clone or by copying and pasting between open projects in Designer.

3. You Can’t Repoint a Domain to Both Projects

  • A custom domain can only point to one Webflow-hosted project at a time.
  • If you need to switch the domain from one project to another:
  • Go to Project Settings > Hosting on both projects.
  • Remove the domain from the old project and add it to the new one.
  • Set up the correct A records: (a) 75.2.70.75, (b) 99.83.190.102.
  • Re-publish the new project to the domain.

4. Consider Workarounds

  • If your goal is to make major changes without affecting the live site, consider:
  • Duplicating the live project as a staging version.
  • Make changes in the duplicate.
  • Manually mirror changes back to the original live site, or switch hosting and the custom domain to the updated copy once ready (requires new hosting plan).

Summary

Webflow CMS hosting is non-transferable between projects. You’ll need to manually migrate CMS content and designs and cannot move your existing hosting plan. If switching to a new project, purchase new hosting and point your domain to the new one.
