Webflow no longer supports animated GIFs as thumbnails on "Made in Webflow" showcase projects. While this functionality used to work, recent changes to the Webflow Showcase platform now default to a static frame (typically the first frame) for all thumbnails.
1. Why GIF Thumbnails No Longer Animate
- Webflow’s Showcase thumbnails are now rendered as static preview images to optimize loading speed and performance across the showcase.
- GIFs uploaded as project thumbnails are effectively converted into a static frame, removing animation.
2. Workarounds (Limited)
- Embed animation on the live demo site: You can still display animated content, including GIFs or Lottie, within the actual published Webflow project—not as the thumbnail.
- Use video in the project preview area: Although not a full replacement, you can share a Loom, Vimeo, or YouTube video in your showcase description to show animations.
- Use the first frame as a styled static representation: Design your GIF so the first frame conveys the animated state clearly (e.g., motion trails, UI states).
3. Alternatives to Achieve Attention-Grabbing Thumbnails
- Design strong, aesthetic static thumbnails that represent the project vibe.
- Use subtle motion-based visual cues (e.g., blur trails or stacked hover effects) in the first frame.
- Promote the live link prominently in your profile and description for users to actually experience the animation.
4. There's No Setting to Re-Enable GIF Animation
- Webflow doesn’t provide a toggle or custom setting to enable motion for showcase thumbnails.
- Even if you upload an actual GIF to the project preview area, Webflow will process it as a static frame.
Summary
Webflow Showcase thumbnails no longer support animated GIFs. They are rendered as static images, and there’s currently no setting or workaround to restore GIF animation within thumbnail previews. Consider embedding animations on the live site or sharing demo videos in the project description.
